| Biermerīs anemia or pernicious anemia is the most common cause of vitamin B12 deficiency. Pernicious anemia is characterized by a gastric mucosal defect that decreases the synthesis of intrinsic factor, and the development of autoantibodies to gastric parietal cells and intrinsic factor. Serum intrinsic factor autoantibodies can be detected in 50 - 70 % of pernicious anemia patients and are highly specific for this disease.
The use of human recombinant intrinsic factor guarantees excellent performance and disease specific results.
The ORGENTEC Anti-Intrinsic-Factor ELISA detects all IgG class autoantibodies against Intrinsic Factor, and in doing so provides a useful tool in the differential diagnosis of pernicious anemia from other causes of vitamin B12 malabsorption. |
