Polymyositis and dermatomyositis are inflammatory muscle diseases characterized by muscle weakness and atrophy of the peripheral muscles. Autoantibodies directive against the Jo-1 antigen can be found in 30 – 40 % of all patients suffering from polymyositis. Additionally, those patients manifest fibrosing alveolitis, Raynaud's phenomenon and features of scleroderma. Jo-1 is synonymous with HistidyltRNA- Synthetase.
