| The serum protein β2-Glycoprotein I (β2-GPI, Apolipoprotein
H) not only is an important cofactor for the
detection of anti-phospholipid antibodies (e.g. Anti-Cardiolipin). It also plays a crucial role as independent
autoantigenic target. The detection of anti-β2-Glycoprotein I anti-
bodies in the sera of patients suffering
from anti-phospholipid syndrome along with clinical
manifestations of thrombosis, thrombocytopenia and
recurrent fetal loss has been repeatedly described.
β2-GPI is a 50 kDa globulin occurring in plasma at a
level of 200 µg/ml. β2-GPI is associated in vivo with
negatively-charged substances, e.g. anionic phospholipids,
heparin and lipoproteins. The phospholipid
binding region is located on its fifth domain. |
